The Lockerby Trust
The Lockerby Almshouses Charity
Trust (The Lockerby Trust for short) was established in the 19th
century by Thomas Lockerby. Tradition
has it that Thomas Lockerby saw the misery caused by the collapse of the City
of Glasgow Bank when many people lost all their savings put by to give them
some money for retirement. He left his
money to provide housing for
"twelve or more persons male or female who have been
reduced in their circumstances by no improvidence extravagance or rash
speculation but on the contrary have always been well conducted honest frugal
and upright in their conduct and never at any time bankrupt or insolvent when
in business but who after acquiring or being left with a competency fully
adequate for supporting them in comfort all the days of their lives have been
reduced by the conduct or representations of others in the investment of their
means and in this way have been defrauded"
Today we own a street on the
outskirts of Edinburgh with 18 houses (cottages) that we provide to suitable
applicants. All applications will be
considered, following the directions from Thomas Lockerby and with due consideration
to current circumstances, such as COVID-19.
The street is a peaceful haven for the occupants who form a caring
community.
